WOLVERHAMPTON, UK, 20 July 2026 – jobsafe is encouraging road transport operators and warehouse businesses across the UK to adopt real-time digital incident reporting as a standard part of everyday safety management. The HSSE reporting platform believes that capturing accurate information at the moment an incident occurs can significantly improve investigations, strengthen compliance and reduce risk for employers operating vehicles, depots and distribution centres.
According to jobsafe, the effectiveness and cost of any safety investigation often depends less on the incident itself and more on the quality of the evidence collected immediately afterwards. Delayed or incomplete reporting can make it far more difficult to establish what happened, increasing both legal and operational risks.
Transport and storage continues to be one of the sectors under the closest scrutiny from workplace and road safety regulators in Great Britain. The latest Health and Safety Executive (HSE) figures show that 15 workers lost their lives in the industry during 2025/26, making it the fourth-highest sector for workplace fatalities after construction, agriculture and manufacturing. Vehicle movements remain the leading cause of fatal incidents within the sector, with more than a quarter of deaths involving workers being struck by moving vehicles.
The industry’s safety challenges extend well beyond fatal incidents. Around 40,000 transport and storage employees reported suffering a non-fatal workplace injury during the latest reporting period, a rate that remains well above the average across all industries. Workplace injuries are also estimated to cost employers around £1.4 billion every year.
Heavy goods vehicles represented just 10 per cent of traffic on England’s motorways and major A roads in 2024, yet they were involved in 19 per cent of collisions resulting in death or serious injury.
National Highways recorded 1,151 crashes involving at least one HGV during the year. Rear-end collisions, most commonly where another vehicle struck the back of a lorry, accounted for 39 per cent of those incidents.
In response, National Highways has partnered with Euro NCAP and other European safety organisations to investigate the causes behind recurring HGV collisions. Meanwhile, Operation Tramline, which places police officers inside elevated HGV cabs to identify unsafe driving behaviour, has detected more than 57,000 driving offences since the initiative began in 2015.
Within warehouses and distribution yards, workplace transport continues to present significant risks. HSE inspectors regularly identify reversing vehicles, loading and unloading operations and forklift movements around pedestrians as some of the sector’s most persistent safety issues. Reversing vehicles alone are linked to almost a quarter of workplace transport fatalities.
Enforcement action has continued to highlight these risks. In July 2025, a grocery wholesaler received a £1 million fine after an employee was fatally struck by a reversing HGV at one of its depots. The HSE investigation concluded that the business had failed to implement a safe system of work for delivery and unloading activities.
Other recent cases include a road haulage company fined £250,000 following the death of a worker inside a shipping container, and a haulage operator fined £160,000 after a warehouse employee lost both legs when an unsecured pallet fell from a forklift truck. Across each investigation, establishing an accurate timeline of events proved critical.
