Liverpool: Jurgen Klopp says Alisson injury is ‘rather serious’

Liverpool will be without first-choice goalkeeper Alisson for an extended period after Jurgen Klopp described the Brazilian’s hamstring injury as “rather serious”.

Alisson was injured in training the day before Liverpool’s 4-1 Premier League win over Brentford in February, having also missed their previous match against Burnley through illness.

Caoimhin Kelleher has impressed while standing in for Alisson in Liverpool’s last five games, helping Klopp’s side overcome Chelsea in the EFL Cup final at Wembley Stadium last week.

While it was originally thought that Alisson might return at some point in March, Klopp suggested the Reds could be without him for a longer period on Friday.

Speaking on the eve of Liverpool’s trip to Nottingham Forest, Klopp said of Alisson’s injury: “There is no real timescale on it, but it is a proper muscle injury.

“It is not a short one. It is a rather serious one, but not a season-ending injury.”

Kelleher has already made 17 appearances across all competitions this season, softening the blow of losing Alisson with a series of composed displays in recent weeks.

Indeed, Liverpool have won all five of their Premier League games without Alisson this season, though they have only kept one clean sheet with Kelleher between the sticks in the competition.
