Liverpool: Van Dijk says Arne could Slot right in at Anfield

Virgil van Dijk believes Arne Slot’s “philosophy” could be a good fit for Liverpool, should the Dutchman succeed Jurgen Klopp at Anfield.

Feyenoord boss Slot is the reported front-runner to take over from Klopp when he leaves at the end of the season. Discussions between Liverpool and the Rotterdam club are thought to have taken place regarding compensation and Slot himself is said to be keen on moving to Merseyside.

Van Dijk, speaking after Liverpool’s 2-0 defeat at Everton last night – a result that may have done irreparable harm to their Premier League title chances, says Slot could be a good fit.

The Reds captain told ViaPlay: “I find it hard to answer of course, but I think Arne Slot is perhaps one of the better Dutch coaches at this moment.

“And I think the way of playing and the philosophy he has, that he could be a Liverpool coach. Only I think [from] what I read and hear is that it’s still far from being completed. We shall see.”

Liverpool’s setback at Goodison Park leaves them three points behind leaders Arsenal with four games to play. Defending champions Manchester City are four adrift of the Gunners but have two games in hand.

Van Dijk was disappointed with the Reds’ display and questioned his team-mates’ desire.

He told Sky Sports: “Do they really want to win the league?

“If you play like this overall in the game and not win any challenges and give the referee an opportunity to give a free-kick away then we have no chance to win the title.

“Very disappointed in so many ways. Everyone has to look in the mirror and look at their own performance and think if they gave everything.

“It is a tough one and obviously we have to do better against a side near the relegation [positions].

“If you play like today we have no chance to consider ourselves in the title race.”
