Local optical teams in the frame

An opticians with stores in Ellesmere Port, Heswall, Cheshire Oaks and Runcorn is shining a spotlight on members of its teams.

Four colleagues from Specsavers Ellesmere Port, Heswall, Cheshire Oaks and Runcorn have not only risen through the ranks but are also celebrating long service milestones, totalling more than 35 years.

Contact lens optician and Mum of two, Jo Gregory, who works in Specsavers Ellesmere Port has clocked up 15 years-service.  Initially starting as an optical assistant in 2007, Jo has managed to complete a three-year dispensing optician college course and a further two years of training to become a specialist practitioner, all around her family life and thanks to flexible working, she’s able to attend important school events and the like.

Specsavers Heswall store manager, Sam Martin, started work in the store ten years ago as an optical assistant with ambitions to progress her career.  Sam has now set her sights on becoming a store director, hopefully within the next five years.

Starting as a Saturday optical assistant more than ten years ago, Sophie Atherton, Specsavers Runcorn, steadily climbed the career ladder to become a store manager and after completing the Specsavers Director Pathway course, fulfilled her lifelong dream to become a store director last year.

Callum Thompson completed his optical apprenticeship in August and has now started a three-year ophthalmic dispensing course at Bradford College, fully funded by Specsavers Cheshire Oaks.  His progress has opened up future opportunities for apprentices across all four stores.

‘Celebrating team success is something we’re always keen to do,’ says Robert Byrne, director at Specsavers Ellesmere Port. ‘We place a lot of emphasis on staff development and ensuring everyone has aims and objectives. Making sure people have something to work towards is crucial in helping to retain team members and we’re proud that so many have reached their long service milestones.

‘We are all very supportive of one another which means we have a really strong team spirit and know how important it is that we help each other out as much as we can.’
