Xabi Alonso: Liverpool, Bayern Munich or Barcelona jobs ruled out by Bayer Leverkusen manager

Xabi Alonso says he will stay at Bayer Leverkusen in 2024/25, ending intense speculation that the manager of the runaway Bundesliga leaders will join Liverpool, Bayern Munich or Barcelona.

After signing a new contract until 2026 in August, Alonso has established himself as one of the best new coaches in Europe by guiding Leverkusen to the brink of the German title in his second season in charge.

“Last week was my deadline, for sure,” the Spaniard said of his decision. “All my cards on the table.

“Until now we have had so many games, been pretty busy and focused, and I wanted to reflect during the international break and take a decision.

“I felt I needed to share it with everyone. It is a sign of respect. We have had a lot of speculation regarding my future.”

Alonso said he had told Leverkusen’s directors as part of a “very good” meeting during the international fixtures, adding that he had informed his players during a team talk on Friday morning.

“At the moment, this is the right place for me to develop as a coach,” said Alonso, who represented Liverpool and Bayern during a glittering playing career as a midfielder.

“I am a young coach. I have to thank the management. The club have been supportive and I feel respected by all departments.”

Next Liverpool manager: Alonso ‘clear’

“The fans have shown great support and they have reasons to believe and dream we will have a great season,” said Alonso.

“I have a great staff to help me work day by day – and so, for sure, the players. It was important [the rumours weren’t] affecting the team and their mentality was good. Everything is clear.”

Leverkusen are 10 points clear of reigning champions Bayern and host Hoffenheim on Saturday in the first of their final eight league games of the season.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is leaving the club after nine years at the end of the season, while Thomas Tuchel will follow suit at Bayern and Xavi is expected to end his reign as Barca boss.
