NHS Waiting Times Fuel Surge in Private Prescriptions Across the UK

With NHS backlogs at unprecedented levels, a growing number of people across the UK are opting for private healthcare in a bid to receive faster treatment.

Among the most notable trends is the sharp increase in private prescriptions, with digital platforms stepping up to support clinics in meeting this growing demand.

Patients Seek Speedier Solutions

There’s growing awareness that the NHS is under immense strain. In the latter part of 2023, figures showed over 7.7 million individuals in England were on NHS waiting lists. As a result, more patients are now exploring private healthcare not only for surgical procedures or specialist consultations, but for everyday services like prescription access.

This change in behaviour has created significant demand for faster, more efficient ways to obtain medication. Many patients are seeking to avoid long queues or sluggish postal services in favour of prompt, dependable alternatives.

Why Digital Prescriptions Are Gaining Traction

A key development has been the rapid rise of e-prescription platforms.

These digital tools enable clinicians to issue private prescriptions electronically and arrange for medication to be delivered directly to patients’ homes. What once required a visit to a local chemist can now be completed entirely from a smartphone.

One of the companies leading this shift is Healistic, which has created a platform linking private clinics, pharmacies, and delivery services to ensure prescriptions can reach patients within just a couple of hours.

Its founder, Daniel Bulkin, recognised the need for a faster, tech-savvy solution.

“People can get food, dinner or a cab in minutes. So why are we still waiting days for medication?” he says.

How Healistic Stands Out

Healistic places simplicity at the heart of its service. Prescriptions are issued digitally in seconds, patients can manage everything through an app or online, and local pharmacies take care of fulfilment. Medication is delivered quickly by eco-friendly couriers — often arriving in under an hour.

The platform is free for healthcare professionals to use and has already been embraced by hundreds of clinics throughout the UK. Patients enjoy the ease of access, while practice managers say it helps cut down on admin and enhances the patient journey.

Importantly, Healistic also supports the issuance and delivery of controlled drugs, including those under Schedules 2 to 5 — a capability not offered by many other platforms due to regulatory requirements.

A Growing Market

Recent reports reveal that the UK private healthcare market reached £12.4 billion in 2023 — up from £11.4 billion the previous year — with private prescriptions contributing significantly to that growth.

In parallel, the pharmacy sector is forecast to expand steadily. Predictions suggest the UK’s retail pharmacy market will exceed £58 billion by 2030, driven in large part by digital innovation.

As more people become confident managing their health digitally, platforms such as Healistic are expected to see continued and increasing demand.

A Broader Vision for Private Care

Healistic’s ambitions go beyond prescription delivery. The team is working towards a “digital patient home” — a centralised platform where patients and healthcare providers can manage multiple elements of care securely.

Daniel Bulkin refers to this concept as “Open Healthcare”, drawing inspiration from Open Banking reforms that allowed individuals to control their financial information. Similarly, Healistic aims to empower patients with complete control over their healthcare, eliminating paperwork, delays and confusion.

A Lasting Change in HealthTech

For patients, clinics, and pharmacies alike, the convenience of digital prescriptions is becoming increasingly attractive. With rising demand for swifter and more flexible care, platforms like Healistic are meeting a vital need in the market.

As private healthcare continues to evolve and technology transforms how services are delivered, it’s likely that offerings such as these will become commonplace — setting a new standard for how care is accessed in the UK.
