Start-Yard to Expand Creative Hub as Birkenhead’s Revival Gains Momentum

Start-Yard, the dynamic creative and business community based in central Birkenhead, has announced a significant new phase of expansion at its Church Street site. The development comes in conjunction with the hub’s upcoming fourth anniversary celebrations later this month, marking a major milestone in its success story.

With most of its current spaces now occupied, Start-Yard is set to launch additional affordable studios and offices to meet increasing demand. The new workspaces will cater to a diverse mix of entrepreneurs, creatives, and independent businesses, further establishing Start-Yard as a cornerstone of Birkenhead’s regeneration and local enterprise growth.

The expansion also includes the addition of a fully equipped photo studio and podcast studio for hire, providing professional-grade facilities for creatives, content producers, and small business owners.

The new space has been delivered with the creative direction of Microzine Creative, in collaboration with A2 Architects (a2architects.co.uk), bringing a contemporary, design-led approach that reflects Start-Yard’s bold, forward-thinking identity.

“We’ve grown almost to capacity, and this expansion is about giving more people the chance to start and grow their business right here in Birkenhead,” said the Start-Yard team. “Our community is full of inspiring startups, creatives, and independent businesses — and this next phase ensures we can support even more of them.”

Start-Yard’s expansion aligns with Birkenhead’s ongoing regeneration, a transformation being driven by Wirral Council and the Town Deal initiative. While Start-Yard has benefited in part from support through the Wirral Town Deal, the focus remains firmly on creating affordable, flexible spaces that help businesses grow and contribute to the town’s wider regeneration vision.

The Church Street area is part of a major redevelopment programme that’s reimagining the town centre — from Woodside through Argyle Street — with new housing, green spaces, and improved cultural and commercial areas.

Wirral Council Leader Paula Basnett has been vocal in her support for community-led regeneration, describing it as “an incredibly welcome boost for Birkenhead,” as local organisations like Start-Yard continue to play a vital role in attracting new energy, creativity, and jobs into the area.

4th Birthday Celebration – Everyone Welcome

To mark four years of growth and creativity, Start-Yard will host its 4th birthday party on Thursday, 24 October from 5 pm at its Church Street site. The event is open to everyone — tenants, partners, and the wider community — to celebrate another exciting year of progress in Birkenhead.

Why This Expansion Matters
  • More affordable units: Flexible spaces for startups and growing businesses of all sizes.
  • Creative studios: On-site photo and podcast facilities for content creators and media professionals.
  • Design-led environment: Creative direction by Microzine Creative in collaboration with A2 Architects.
  • Part of Birkenhead’s renaissance: Supporting the Church Street, Woodside, and Argyle Street regeneration vision.
  • Supported in part through the Wirral Town Deal — contributing to wider regeneration efforts.
