Cheap VPS hosting can lead to costly security mistakes, technology expert warns

Businesses attracted by the lower cost of Virtual Private Server (VPS) hosting could end up facing expensive security and recovery issues if they underestimate the responsibilities that come with managing their own server environment, a leading technology expert has warned.

VPS hosting has become a popular choice for growing businesses because it offers many of the benefits of a dedicated server at a significantly lower cost. However, while a VPS provides greater control, performance and flexibility than shared hosting, much of the responsibility for security and maintenance falls on the customer.

Roy Shelton, the CEO of Connectus Business Solutions, said: “A VPS can be an excellent option for businesses that have outgrown shared hosting but don’t need the cost and capacity of a dedicated server.

“The attraction is obvious – you get far greater control and stronger performance without paying for an entire physical machine. The risk is that many businesses underestimate how much responsibility comes with that freedom.”

Unlike shared hosting, where multiple websites share the same environment, a VPS uses virtualisation technology to create isolated server environments on a single physical machine. This means businesses benefit from dedicated resources and improved security separation from other users.

However, Mr Shelton said many organisations fail to recognise that server security remains largely their responsibility.

“Servers are constantly being scanned by cybercriminals looking for vulnerabilities,” he said. “If software updates are missed, firewalls are poorly configured, or backups are neglected, the cost of recovering from a security incident can quickly outweigh any savings made on hosting.”

Businesses evaluating hosting options should also understand the differences between VPS, dedicated servers and cloud-based services.

Shared hosting is generally the most affordable option but offers limited control and can suffer performance issues if neighbouring websites consume excessive resources. Dedicated servers provide maximum performance and control but come with significantly higher infrastructure and management costs.

A VPS sits between the two, making it particularly attractive for start-ups and growing businesses that need more flexibility without the expense of dedicated hardware.

Mr Shelton added: “One of the biggest advantages of a VPS is that your environment is isolated from other customers. If another website on the same physical server experiences a problem, it is far less likely to affect your business.

“But security is only as strong as the way the server is managed. Businesses should ensure they choose a reputable provider and understand exactly what is included in their hosting package.”

He recommends organisations assess three key areas before selecting a VPS provider:

Provider credentials – Look for recognised standards such as ISO/IEC 27001 and Cyber Essentials or Cyber Essentials Plus accreditation. Strong DDoS protection and a proven security track record should also be considered essential.
Data centre security – Reputable facilities employ multiple layers of protection, including controlled access, CCTV monitoring, on-site staff, redundant power supplies, cooling systems and fire suppression measures.
Security and recovery services – Managed VPS packages can include software patching, security monitoring and backup services, reducing the burden on businesses without in-house technical expertise.

Mr Shelton said: “The cheapest option is not always the most cost-effective. A professionally managed VPS can save businesses considerable time, reduce security risks and provide valuable peace of mind.”
