‘It’s not over until I win’ – Everton’s Dele Alli sends defiant message after returning to training

Everton’s Dele Alli has sent out a defiant message over his future after opening up on his mental health struggles earlier this year, saying: “It’s not over until I win”.

The former Tottenham midfielder, who joined Everton in January 2022 but has only made a total of 13 appearances for the Toffees, has not played a competitive game in almost nine months.

He endured a frustrating loan spell with Turkish Super Lig side Besiktas last season, being cast out of the Istanbul giants’ squad from late February onwards.

After a difficult few years, Alli opened up on his mental health struggles in an interview with former Manchester United defender Gary Neville in July, revealing he spent six weeks at a rehab facility in the United States after becoming addicted to sleep medication to combat the trauma of being sexually abused as a child.

Alli remains under contract with Everton until next year, but he has not played a single minute of competitive football this season after being sidelined by a groin injury.

Toffees boss Sean Dyche has outlined his intention to reintegrate Alli upon his return to fitness, and the 27-year-old’s message, posted on Instagram on Wednesday, might suggest he has unfinished business in the Premier League.

Speaking about Alli’s recovery earlier this month, Dyche said the former Spurs man “has some way to go” but was “in a good place” after being able to train on the grass for the first time this campaign.

Everton return to Premier League action against Manchester United at Goodison Park on November 26, with the Toffees currently eight points clear of the relegation zone after winning four of their last seven league games.
