Jurgen Klopp: ‘Really cool’ to see Sven-Goran Eriksson achieve Liverpool dream

Jurgen Klopp was delighted to hear that Sven-Goran Eriksson will be part of a Liverpool legends management team for a charity game at Anfield next month.

Former England manager Eriksson revealed in January that he has one year to live in the “best-case” scenario after being diagnosed with cancer.

The 75-year-old, who led Benfica and Lazio to league titles before taking the England job, has since said he grew up as a Liverpool fan and “always wished” to manage the Reds.

Earlier this week, Liverpool confirmed the Swede will get the chance to take charge of a game at Anfield, joining John Aldridge, John Barnes and Ian Rush in the dugout when a team of Liverpool greats face a team made up of Ajax legends on March 23.

Asked about the announcement on Friday, Klopp said: “It’s great, absolutely great.

“I was convinced it would work out some way, and then this is really nice. A legend coaches legends, so it’s really cool.

“I’ve never been here when the legends team played, but I know that they use the whole facility, they train on the pitch, play at the stadium.

“Everybody who is involved in the organisation tries to make it as great as somehow possible and I think all the guys who show up here always enjoy it.

“Now with Sven in charge, I cannot say they will now play better than when Kenny [Dalglish] is the coach! But with that experience on the bench, yeah, they should play a good game.

“I’m really happy for Sven that he can have that opportunity. I can tell you it is a good place to come.”

Former striker Fernando Torres will be among the players playing for Eriksson, lining up alongside the likes of Jerzy Dudek, Martin Skrtel and Ryan Babel, who will feature for both teams.
