Next Liverpool manager: Slot ‘strong candidate’ to replace Klopp – reports

Liverpool have made Feyenoord manager Arne Slot a “strong candidate” to replace Jurgen Klopp when the German ends his reign of almost nine years at Anfield at the end of this season, according to widespread reports.

Dutchman Slot led the Eredivisie club to the title in his homeland last season and a KNVB cup triumph on Sunday, as well as the Uefa Europa Conference League final in his first campaign in charge in 2021/22.

Michael Edwards, the new chief executive officer of football for Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group, and incoming sporting director Richard Hughes consider Slot “among the frontrunners”, the Guardian has said.

The outlet added that Tottenham were interested in Slot last season and named Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Milan as potential rivals targeting the 45-year-old.

Liverpool are said to be keen on Slot because of his reputation for playing aggressive football on a modest budget.

Arne Slot record

Feyenoord are having another impressive season under former Zwolle, Breda and Sparta Rotterdam midfielder Slot, winning 22 and losing only two of their 30 league matches.

They are unbeaten in 21 games domestically, including a 6-0 win at home to Ajax on April 7.

Runaway leaders PSV were the last Dutch team to defeat Feyenoord, beating them 2-1 on December 3.

A defeat at Lazio in November proved fatal to their chances of reaching the Champions League knockout stage and they were unfortunate to meet in-form Roma – who beat them 1-0 in the Conference League final – in the Europa League play-offs, losing on penalties after two legs.

Sporting CP’s Ruben Amorim, Brighton & Hove Albion’s Roberto De Zerbi and Bayer Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso are also thought to be on the Reds’ list of potential managers.

Alonso ended speculation around his future by committing himself to Leverkusen next season before leading the Bundesliga club to an emphatic first ever title, dethroning Bayern Munich in style in his first full season as a manager.

The former Spain international won the Champions League and FA Cup during five years in Liverpool’s midfield.
