A Deaf Man’s Fight for Belonging – John Paul Morris Shares His Story in a Powerful New Memoir

Good Reach Publishing has announced the publication of The Journey of Struggles to Be Accepted in the Hearing World, a moving and deeply reflective memoir written by profoundly deaf author John Paul Morris. The book offers an honest exploration of the challenges faced by individuals who live between the Deaf community and the hearing world.

Through this deeply personal narrative, Morris recounts the experiences that shaped his life, providing readers with an insightful look at the barriers still encountered by many deaf individuals. He reflects on growing up with deafness, limited educational opportunities, and the social and professional obstacles that followed, while also discussing the impact these experiences had on his mental wellbeing.

Central to the memoir is the significance of Deaf culture and British Sign Language (BSL), both of which Morris describes as essential to identity and community connection. He calls for wider awareness and stronger commitment to accessibility across key areas of society, including education, healthcare and the workplace. By sharing his experiences, Morris urges the hearing community to better understand and respect Deaf culture.

Although the book explores many difficult moments, it ultimately tells a story of perseverance, courage and optimism. Morris highlights the role of friendship, determination and collective advocacy in the ongoing pursuit of equality and social inclusion.

“Deafness should not define who we are or limit our potential. Through this book, I want to share the challenges we face daily and highlight the incredible strength of the Deaf community,” says Morris.

The memoir is dedicated to the memory of Morris’s close friend Dan Hulme, whose encouragement inspired him to tell his story. In addition to exploring Deaf culture, the book also delves into mental health, examining themes of loneliness, identity, recovery and personal resilience.

Published by Good Reach Publishing, The Journey of Struggles to Be Accepted in the Hearing World invites readers to view life through Morris’s perspective and to gain a greater appreciation of what it means to live as a Deaf person in a predominantly hearing society.
