Late Payments hurting Cheshire’s Private Businesses Post Strong Growth

CHESHIRE, UK — Cheshire’s largest privately owned businesses generated combined turnover of £29.4 billion in the latest Cheshire LTD. report from Grant Thornton, with EBITDA reaching £2.1 billion and employment across the county’s Top 100 firms rising by 6.2 per cent. Regeneration programmes in Crewe, Chester and Warrington, alongside innovation-led sites such as the Cheshire Science Corridor and Alderley Park, continue to support the county’s reputation as one of the North West’s most commercially significant areas.

Despite that momentum, businesses across Cheshire are not immune to a late payment problem that continues to affect firms nationally. Sage’s SME Performance Pulse, published in June 2026, found that 49 per cent of invoices issued by UK small businesses remain overdue, with an average wait of 27 days beyond agreed terms. The same research found that SMEs are now taking an average of 37.1 days to pay their own suppliers, up from 31.9 days a year earlier, as delayed incoming payments put pressure on outgoing ones.

Cheshire’s business base spans established family-owned firms, professional services companies and a growing life sciences and advanced manufacturing sector. For firms operating in these industries, unpaid invoices are rarely just an accounting inconvenience — they affect the ability to invest in new equipment, take on additional staff, or commit to expansion plans with confidence.

Leading B2B Debt Recovery specialists Federal Management, which provides premier b2b  debt recovery services to UK businesses including firms based across Cheshire, said the county’s mix of established and scaling businesses means the impact of late payment can vary significantly by sector.

“Growth figures like these are genuinely encouraging for the county, but strong turnover doesn’t necessarily mean strong cash flow,” Chris Spencer for Federal Management said. “We see well-run, profitable businesses still get caught out because a client several tiers up the supply chain has decided to sit on a payment. Formal business debt recovery action is often what’s needed to bring that back on track.”

For consumer and smaller commercial debts including sectors such as private schools, healthcare debt and veterinary practices, all well represented across Cheshire’s towns, industry leading consumer debt collection experts Frontline Collections assists many organisations, recovering millions in the process.

Both esteemed debt collection agencies are FCA regulated debt collection service providers and can escalate matters to legal action where a debt remains unresolved.

Businesses pursuing commercial debts have a statutory right, under the Late Payment of Commercial Debts (Interest) Act 1998, to charge interest of 8 per cent above the Bank of England base rate on overdue invoices, along with reasonable recovery costs — provided payment terms were clearly agreed in writing at the outset.

The Office of the Small Business Commissioner introduced the voluntary Fair Payment Code in late 2024 to encourage larger organisations to pay suppliers more promptly, replacing the earlier Prompt Payment Code. Research published by Hiscox in February 2026 nonetheless found that UK SMEs remain collectively owed £70.4 billion, suggesting a gap remains between the code’s ambitions and everyday payment practice.

Businesses in Cheshire are advised to formalise payment terms in writing, carry out credit checks on new clients, issue reminders ahead of due dates, and seek professional recovery support once internal efforts to collect a debt have stalled.
