How Cheshire’s Carden Park is Supporting Women’s Football

Carden Park, home to an onsite UEFA approved pitch, hosted the Swedish National Women’s Football team during European Football Championship…

Carden Park Estate, situated within the picturesque Cheshire Countryside, was the official base of the Swedish National’s Women’s Team during this year’s European Football Championship.

Eager to become the home to women’s football in the UK, the award-winning spa hotel was integral to the team’s success, offering a luxury sporting retreat with everything the players needed during the championship. During the three-week tournament, the team had their very own exclusive wing, a quarter of the building, a separate entrance, their own chef, a breakout room, and a press room for interviews. Additionally, they also had full access to the estate’s wellbeing facilities including the PGA-certified golf courses, the award-winning spa and of course the UEFA football grounds, where many other international and UK teams have played.

On their stay at Carden Park Estate, Head of Delegation and National Manager Marika Domanski Lyfors says: “We had a really good feeling about our base camp of Carden Park Estate, and we’re thrilled to say that it was more than we could have ever imagined. Not only did the team to have their own section of the hotel to relax privately between games but having somewhere to train right on the grounds with access to the spa at any time, meant maximum training for the players without burning out. We can’t thank the team at Carden Park enough for providing the best conditions for our team and ultimately, assisting their well-deserved success. We will definitely be returning!”

In between games and training sessions, the players recharged in the spa, which is one of the best in Europe, and enjoyed exclusive spa treatments. Coupled with friendly rounds of golf and delicious healthy food from the on-site restaurants, Carden Park supported the players to live well and stay rested between games. In particular, the team enjoyed using the championship Niklaus golf course, leisure club and driving range.

Speaking on the team’s stay, Director and General Manager of Carden Park Hotel, Hamish Ferguson says; “We were absolutely delighted to have had the team stay with us. As one of the best teams in European Ladies Football, we always knew they would achieve success and we couldn’t be happier that our award-winning spa and sports resort played a part. Despite the Lionesses historic win, women across the country continue to struggle to find pitch space to train. However, at Carden Park, we are committed to providing a welcoming space for women and girls to train, along with all the luxury facilities sportswomen of this calibre deserve.”

Commenting on Carden Park’s dedication to the sport, Adam Kaliniecki, Team Services Coordinator at UEFA Women’s Euros said: “Team Sweden deemed Carden Park Hotel with their on-site football pitch as an ideal set-up for their tournament preparations, removing the need for the team to travel to a separate training facility. Carden Park Hotel worked closely with the English Football Association as tournament organisers to ensure that all preparations were made to the highest standards. This included close collaboration with sports surface consultants Pro Pitch to ensure that the football pitch was prepared and maintained to an international standard. Throughout the competition the staff at Carden Park worked tirelessly with all stakeholders including tournament organisation, security, and the team itself to ensure that Sweden’s experience was smooth and successful. We are grateful to everyone at Carden Park for their service and commitment to the Women’s Euro project and for delivering an experience fitting for the high profile of the occasion.”

In the 2022 Women’s Euros tournament, the Swedish women’s team came in joint third place with France.
