BMW Leads the Pack: UK Drivers Show Their Pride in Car Maintenance

The UK’s premier touch-up paint retailer recently conducted a comprehensive study to uncover which car owners take the most pride in maintaining their cherished vehicles. This research delved into the intricate relationship between car brands and the meticulous care routines of their owners, shedding light on the unique pride and maintenance habits of drivers across the nation.

Using a combination of Chipex’s UK sales data and the DVLA‘s UK car registration data, Chipex formulated an index that scored drivers on a scale from 0 to 200, assessing their likelihood of purchasing touch-up paint. Through this index, Chipex was able to gauge the true extent of pride exhibited by drivers of various car brands.

Key Findings:

  1. Luxury Brands and Meticulous Owners: Owners of prestigious car brands like BMW, Tesla, Porsche, Jaguar, and others are at the forefront of paint upkeep, showcasing a deeper sense of pride in their vehicle’s appearance and an unwavering commitment to perfection. Impressively, 11 out of the 77 car manufacturers featured in the study achieved a perfect Chipex Index score of 200, including Porsche, Alfa Romeo, and Aston Martin.
  2. BMW Surpasses Mercedes: In the age-old rivalry between BMW and Mercedes-Benz, BMW owners emerge as champions in terms of taking pride in their vehicle’s appearance, boasting a perfect paintwork maintenance score of 200. This outshines their Mercedes counterparts, who scored 130 in comparison.
  3. Electric Cars Combine Style and Sustainability: Tesla drivers, with a perfect score of 200, demonstrate an unyielding dedication to aesthetics, possibly reflecting their forward-thinking and eco-conscious mindset.
  4. Everyday Cars Embrace Imperfections: Brands like Vauxhall (with a score of 39) and Toyota (with a score of 51), along with owners of compact cars, exhibit a more relaxed attitude towards minor blemishes, reflecting an acceptance of life’s inevitable wear and tear.
  5. Family Cars Prioritise Functionality: Drivers of family cars are five times less likely to address unsightly blemishes compared to BMW owners. For them, the functionality and cherished memories associated with their vehicles take precedence over aesthetic perfection. Popular family-oriented SUVs such as the Nissan Qashqai and Kia Sportage scored 38 and 37, respectively.

Johnny Graham, the founder of Chipex, remarked:

“The study highlights a clear correlation between luxury car ownership and the quest for perfection. We sell touch up paint for all brands, but there is a need to educate drivers of ‘everyday runarounds’ that our product exists, it’s affordable and is easy to use. Not only can a quick touch up job help retain the value of your car, it can help instil a sense of pride for your beloved motor; whether it’s a top-of-the-range Aston Martin or a humble Skoda.”
