Liverpool: Steidten flirts with Anfield vacancy

West Ham technical director Tim Steidten says he is flattered to be linked with Liverpool but is yet to be approached by the Premier League leaders.

Liverpool are looking for a new sporting director to replace Jorg Schmadtke, who left the club following the January transfer window.

Steidten has only been with the Hammers since the start of the season but reports of a difficult relationship with David Moyes has put other clubs on alert.

Speaking to Sky Germany, Steidten said: “I have heard that I am supposedly on the list at Liverpool. It is one of the biggest clubs in the world so it is an honour. But, so far, no-one from Liverpool has contacted me.”

It is unlikely his words will go down well in east London, although Steidten did claim to be “comfortable” at West Ham.

He added: “In general, I feel comfortable at West Ham. I quickly realised how intense this league is.

“We have signed the right players in the last transfer windows, the squad is strong and we can achieve our goals.

“I look forward to the next few weeks and months until the end of the season. Of course, we are already planning for the next window. And then we will see what happens in the future.”

Steidten does potentially have one advantage over the other contenders having brought Xabi Alonso to the Bundesliga during his time at Bayer Leverkusen.

Alonso is the bookmakers’ favourite to succeed Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp in the Anfield hot-seat when he stands down at the end of the season.
