Notts Sport Introduces CocoTurf: The World’s First Plastic-Free Artificial Grass

Notts Sport, the UK’s leading specialist in play and sports surfacing, has unveiled CocoTurf, the first-ever artificial turf made entirely from natural coconut fibres. This revolutionary product offers a sustainable, high-performance alternative to traditional synthetic grass, making playgrounds and recreational spaces more eco-friendly without compromising durability or safety.

As environmental awareness continues to shape industries worldwide, Notts Sport has responded with an innovative solution that eliminates plastics from artificial turf. Unlike conventional synthetic grass, which often contains plastic materials, CocoTurf is completely free from plastics, microplastics, and per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), setting a new standard for environmentally responsible play surfaces.

CocoTurf is crafted from renewable coconut husks, processed into durable, high-performance fibres. It is supported by a backing made from certified natural rubber latex, ensuring that it remains entirely plastic-free and non-toxic. This sustainable composition makes it ideal for playgrounds, schools, parks, and other outdoor spaces with heavy foot traffic.

One of the key advantages of CocoTurf is its reduced environmental footprint. Unlike traditional artificial turf, which sheds microplastics into the environment, CocoTurf is biodegradable, significantly reducing its long-term impact. The use of natural coconut fibres also lowers the carbon footprint associated with plastic-based turf manufacturing. Moreover, CocoTurf is engineered for durability, withstanding various weather conditions while maintaining its integrity over time.

To illustrate its production process, each coconut produces approximately 200 grams of usable fibres, with the husks of 600 coconuts providing enough material to cover a 60-square-metre play area.

Duncan Bennett, CEO of Notts Sport, shared his excitement about this innovation: “This is a milestone in the evolution of outdoor play surfaces. Our drive to find ever more sustainable surfacing solutions has led us to invent the world’s first non-plastic synthetic grass—CocoTurf. This is not just another product—it’s a revolution in sustainability. For the first time, communities can install an artificial surface without the harmful impact of plastics. This is the future of play surfaces, and we’re thrilled to lead the charge.”

With its innovative design and superior performance, CocoTurf presents the ideal choice for those seeking a safe, long-lasting, and environmentally responsible surfacing solution. It is set to transform outdoor play areas by offering a greener, more sustainable alternative to traditional artificial grass.

Through the launch of CocoTurf, Notts Sport is paving the way for a more sustainable future, enabling communities to enjoy the benefits of artificial turf without the environmental drawbacks associated with plastic-based surfaces.
