UK’s January Smart Meter Installations Hit a 30% High, Surpassing Pre-Pandemic Figures

In an encouraging development for the UK’s energy sector, January 2024 witnessed a 30% month-on-month surge in smart meter installations, achieving a total of 221,000 installations.

This uptick signifies a 21% increase compared to the same timeframe last year, achieving the highest January installation figures since 2020, as reported by ElectraLink.

The significant rise in new meter installations is being celebrated as a vital recovery milestone, recording the highest January installation numbers since the disruption caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

In the early months of the pandemic, specifically in April 2020, the report highlights a dramatic reduction in installations, which fell to 12,000 due to the social distancing regulations implemented across the country.

From the launch of the smart meter program in 2012 up to now, ElectraLink has reported a cumulative 22.48 million installations. January’s figures showed continued strength in regions typically leading in installations, with East England leading the charge with 27,000 installations, followed by southern England at 25,000, and the East Midlands at 21,000.
