Estate Planning Expert Assists Members of Community Charity

A Bollington-based wills and trusts company has been sharing specialist advice with a Macclesfield charity to support the future of vulnerable and disabled people.

Joe Etherington from Moneybox Wills and Trusts, based in Adelphi Mill, hosted a ‘Planning Ahead Workshop’ for parents and carers at Space4Autism to raise awareness of estate planning, in particular discretionary trusts, and the importance of having a will to protect the future of their children.

Speaking about the event, Joe said: “It’s little known that, if someone who is living with autism or has a learning difficulty has an inheritance left directly to them,  it could lead to the loss of their means-tested benefits and support package.

“Setting up a discretionary trust for a disabled or vulnerable person who is unable to manage their own financial affairs can give them valuable security and protection.”

Expert Joe explained to Space4Autism members the main advantage of a Discretionary Trust is that it offers the appointed trustees the flexibility to use their discretion to use the gifted capital or income of the disabled or vulnerable person to support their changing needs throughout their lifetime, so that they receive the full benefit of that money in the most supportive and enriching way.

Space4Autism was set up by a group of parents in 2005 and provides help and support to over 5,100 members living with Autistic Spectrum Conditions (ASC).

Founder, Cheryl Simpson MBE said: “It’s a sensitive but important subject and the knowledge shared sympathetically by Joe with our members was a real eye-opener.  I am sure many will be following his advice.”

Along with workshops and events with professionals such as Joe, the charity holds clubs and events for members of all ages, offers an extensive parent/carer training and activity programme, and has a community cafe which is open to all.

Joe added: “Making a Will isn’t always about death or tax.  To me estate planning is about doing what is best for your family so that you and they can live in peace and comfort”.

“Death and later life planning can be a very emotive subject, especially when those left behind have additional needs or might need support, such as those living with autism.

“It was a pleasure to share some simple solutions and ways of protecting vulnerable family members.”

The team at Moneybox Wills and Trusts is happy to share advice with other community groups. Anyone interested in finding out more can contact Moneybox Wills and Trusts on 01625 573521. For more information on Space4Austism visit https://space4autism.com/
