Liverpool duo Jota and Jones to miss EFL Cup final – reports

Liverpool duo Diogo Jota and Curtis Jones will miss Sunday’s EFL Cup final against Chelsea after sustaining injuries during Saturday’s win over Brentford, according to reports.

Jota and Jones were both forced off in the first half of the Premier League leaders’ 4-1 victory at the Gtech Community Stadium as their selection issues deepened.

Jones left the stadium on crutches after sustaining an ankle injury, while there are fears that Jota may have suffered a serious knee problem after Christian Norgaard landed on the Portugal forward following a coming-together.

Jurgen Klopp was unable to offer a timeframe on either player’s recovery after Saturday’s game, but widespread reports on Monday suggested neither will be fit for Sunday’s Wembley showpiece against Chelsea.

Liverpool were also forced to withdraw forward Darwin Nunez at half-time against Brentford, with Klopp saying the Uruguayan felt muscle discomfort after scoring the opener.

They are now awaiting an update on his condition ahead of a crucial week in Klopp’s final season at Anfield.

The depleted Reds are already without Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dominik Szoboszlai after they suffered fitness setbacks in recent weeks, while Thiago Alcantara, Stefan Bajcetic and Joel Matip are long-term absentees.

Goalkeeper Alisson, meanwhile, suffered a muscle injury ahead of the trip to Brentford, though the Brazilian may not have started the EFL Cup final even if fit, with Caoimhin Kelleher playing all five of the Reds’ games in the competition so far this season.

Before they can think about Wembley, Liverpool face Luton Town in their next Premier League fixture on Wednesday, with Klopp set to host his pre-match news conference on Tuesday.
