Andy Murray: French Open results ‘miniscule’ compared to Nadal and Djokovic

Andy Murray has called his achievements at the French Open “miniscule” compared to Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic after bowing out in the first round of the 2024 tournament to fellow veteran Stan Wawrinka.

Briton’s Murray lost 6-4 6-4 6-2, meaning the 39-year-old Swiss has beaten him in each of his last three appearances in Paris, previously prevailing in their matches in 2017 and 2020.

Nadal’s 14 singles titles make the Spaniard the most successful player in the history of the tournament, while Djokovic – the reigning champion and top seed – has lifted the trophy three times in the last eight years.

“I did really well here over the years,” Murray said after what could be his final singles appearance at Roland Garros.

“The issue for me is that when you compare it to what Rafa or Novak achieved in the same time, it obviously is minuscule in comparison.

“In a different time, maybe the results would have been a bit different. But I’m proud of the results I’ve had here.”

Andy Murray: French Open results ‘good’

Murray was a consistent contender at the second grand slam of the year between 2011 and 2017, including four semi-finals and a quarter-final.

Now 37, the two-time Wimbledon champion and 2012 US Open titlist lost the French Open final to Djokovic in 2016 despite winning the first set.

“Most players would sign up for the results I’ve had here,” reflected Murray, saying there was “no shame” in his campaigns since 2006.

“I have great memories. It was not an easy surface for me. But I always showed up and put in some strong performances, considering. It was a good run here over the years.”

The Scot is still in Paris because of his involvement in the doubles competition with compatriot Dan Evans.

Murray could also return to the venue for the 2024 Olympic Games tennis tournament, which runs from July 27 until August 4.
