Laura Rachelle Taylor’s ‘A Mum Like This’ Sheds Light on PMDD and Motherhood’s Hidden Battles

In her latest literary work, A Mum Like This, celebrated author Laura Rachelle Taylor delves into the intricate and often untold aspects of motherhood, from navigating a sea of contradictory guidance and meddlesome interferences to confronting antiquated expectations and the ordeal of postnatal recovery left unsupported.

This 52-week memoir, a blend of poetry and prose, captures the essence of the first postpartum year through weekly diary entries and poems, offering an intimate glimpse into the emotional spectrum of new motherhood. It was during this transformative period that Laura was diagnosed with Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD), a significant endocrine disorder that had eluded diagnosis for years, yet profoundly impacted her life.

Taylor bravely recounts the severe manifestations of PMDD she experienced, including a meningioma (brain tumour) and excruciating pain from cystic breasts that rendered her unable to perform basic tasks. She poignantly describes how living with an undiagnosed condition led her to a path of self-destruction, affecting her relationships and life during the tumultuous periods of hormonal imbalance. Through her narrative, Laura illuminates the struggle against “the PMDD monster,” chronicling her journey towards diagnosis and the eventual discovery of moments of clarity amidst the disorder’s chaos.

Set against the unconventional backdrop of raising her child in a shed amid renovations, Taylor redefines the essence of motherhood, eschewing societal pressures for a pared-down, nature-infused approach to parenting. Her adventures into the natural world, library escapades, and the meaningful connections forged in her locale of Northwich, Cheshire, offer a tranquil portrayal of maternal life.

A Mum Like This resonates with a diverse community of mothers navigating similar complexities, providing solace and a sense of camaraderie in the multifaceted realm of parenthood and PMDD. Taylor’s memoir serves as a comforting affirmation to new parents and those grappling with PMDD, validating their experiences as both real and shared.

Scheduled for release in paperback on Amazon from 19th March 2024. For further insights into Laura Rachelle’s writings and journey, follow her on Instagram: @laurarachellewriter.
