Merseyside man takes on charity challenge for Wirral Hospice

Just weeks after losing his father to cancer, Merseyside runner Mike Ng is embarking on a unique ‘5 in 25’ charity challenge.

Mike (44) from Bebington, will run five city marathons starting this Sunday in Paris.

He will follow that with the Manchester GB marathon on April 27 and the Edinburgh marathon in May. In September, he will run the Berlin marathon before finishing the challenge in Amsterdam a month later.

Mike wants to raise funds for Wirral Hospice St John’s following the ‘tender and respectful’ care given to his late father Yick Mo Ng who passed away in March, after battling oesophageal cancer.

Yick ran The New Sunrise Restaurant – formerly The Blue Sky Restaurant – on Oxton Road, Birkenhead, for more than 40 years.

Mike, whose surname “Ng” actually means ‘5’ in Cantonese, said: “The hospice looked after dad in his final days and were absolutely amazing. We really couldn’t have managed without them. I know money is tight at the moment, but if you do donate the money goes directly to helping other families during their most challenging times.

He added: “My father was an amazing resilient man who survived a world war and a communist Chinese regime. He navigated the busy streets of Hong Kong and finally settled here in the UK. He then went on to run a successful restaurant business while raising a family. He continued to give back to his wider family and community throughout his life. If I could be half the man he was I would be doing extremely well.”

Teresa Nightingale, income generation and marketing director at Wirral Hospice said: “We are very grateful to Mike for taking on this epic challenge for the hospice, and the significance of it to him in memory of his dear father. We look forward to seeing Mike travel the globe over the coming year; his fundraising efforts will make such a difference for families like Mike’s who need our hospice care and support.”
