Colin Jackson Encourages Graduates at The Hammond’s Celebration of Achievement

CHESTER, UK, June 19, 2026 – Students from The Hammond marked a major milestone in their educational journeys as the renowned performing arts and academic institution hosted its annual Graduation Day celebrations. Joining graduates, families and staff for the occasion was former world champion hurdler, broadcaster and television personality Colin Jackson CBE, who shared insights from his remarkable career and inspired students as they prepared for the next stage of their futures.

Colin attended two graduation and awards ceremonies held throughout the day, celebrating accomplishments across both The Hammond School and The Hammond College. The first event recognised Year 11 students completing their secondary education, while the second honoured college graduates preparing to enter the professional performing arts sector.

Recognised as one of Britain’s most accomplished athletes, Colin enjoyed an exceptional sporting career that saw him become a World Champion, Commonwealth Champion, European Champion and world record holder in the 110-metre hurdles. During his visit, he spoke about the importance of commitment, perseverance, self-discipline and accountability in achieving long-term success, highlighting the strong connections between elite sport and professional performance careers.

Students had the opportunity to hear first-hand about the mindset required to excel at the highest level. Drawing on experiences from both international athletics and his participation in Strictly Come Dancing, Colin discussed the similarities between sport and the performing arts, including the value of rigorous training, determination, handling pressure and consistently delivering outstanding performances.

The Hammond offers a distinctive educational pathway that enables students to progress from secondary education through vocational training and higher education within the same institution. Throughout the ceremonies, graduates were recognised for successfully combining academic studies with intensive performance training while developing the confidence, resilience and professionalism required in competitive industries.

Speaking at the event, Jennifer Roscoe, Principal of The Hammond, said: “Graduation and Awards Day is one of the most significant events in our calendar. It allows us to celebrate the achievements of students across both our School and College and recognise not only academic and artistic excellence, but also dedication, character and personal development.

“We were delighted to welcome Colin Jackson to speak with our students. His achievements reflect many of the values we encourage at The Hammond, including hard work, resilience, discipline and striving for excellence. These qualities are essential in both elite sport and the performing arts.”

Addressing graduates, Colin Jackson CBE said: “Success rarely comes by chance. Whether your ambitions lie in sport, performance, business or another profession, progress is built on consistent effort, confidence in yourself and a commitment to continual growth.

“Throughout my career, I discovered that talent alone is not enough. Discipline, resilience, accountability and the ability to perform under pressure are what truly set people apart. I have been hugely impressed by the professionalism and dedication shown by students at The Hammond today. The skills they are developing will benefit them throughout their careers and beyond.”

The event also shone a spotlight on The Hammond Scholarship Fund, which helps talented young people access specialist education and training opportunities regardless of financial circumstances.

Jennifer Roscoe added: “The Hammond Scholarship Fund has a life-changing impact. Many of today’s graduates from both the School and College have been able to pursue their ambitions thanks to the generosity of our supporters. We believe talented young people should have every opportunity to succeed, and we remain committed to making exceptional education and training accessible to those who need it most.”

As this year’s graduates move forward into the next stage of their lives, The Hammond remains dedicated to developing future performers, creatives and industry professionals through outstanding academic and vocational education, spanning secondary school, higher education and professional training.

The Hammond also welcomes audiences to experience the talents of its students through a variety of performances and showcases held throughout the year. These events provide opportunities to see some of the UK’s most promising emerging performers in action. Information about upcoming productions and events is available via The Hammond’s website.
